how do I get started with yoga?
every sunday at 11.00am we offer a 45 minute introduction to yoga class. we demonstrate and review over the basics (breathing, alignment, what does yoga mean anyway), answer your questions and find out what you want to get out of yoga. what is your motivation, your point of view?
all those new to yoga are encouraged to start with any
beginner friendly easy level class;
see schedule for details.
if you can't make the introduction class then please try and come to any easy level class 10-15 minutes early so we can talk with you and check your condition. if you don't have a mat, we have mats you can use for no extra charge for as long as you need. also, our staff can guide you in purchasing the right one for you either in our esy store or elsewhere.
how do I prepare for a yoga class?
- wear loose comfortable clothes that allow you to move your hips and shoulders. layers are good in case body temperature changes between physical movements and resting times. classes are done barefoot and on a yoga mat.
- don't eat for at least two hours before class it will affect your practice; keep hydrated: you can bring water into the studio and esy has complimentary water available.
- limit colognes or perfumes (please) many people are sensitive to scents.
- focus on yourself, be aware of trying to emulate others, it's not a competition. your attention should always be inwards.
- don't be afraid to ask questions and share information about your condition (back pain, old injuries, heart or breathing problems), it's important to be open and if something “hurts” take rest and ask the teacher.
- most important – be patient with yourself. you are planting the seed with a first class and it takes time for the tree to grow. observe yourself, be compassionate to yourself and before you know it, you will see physical and mental improvements.
- enjoy yourself, it's esy!
