Our Story

Launched in the fall of 2009, Eastside Yoga’s center was built and infused with love by husband and wife team, Steven and Elsa. Steven’s passion for yoga, meditation and spirituality was combined with experience in his family’s small business in Scotland. For years he dealt with stress in the corporate world, so he started a yoga and meditation practice to cope. We moved to Austin in 2008 and the ideas for the business came together one winter afternoon sitting outside Central Market. The scribbles of a logo and vision statement came to life.

In 2009, we took a giant leap of faith – Steven quit his corporate career to teach yoga and we opened the yoga studio. Elsa practices as a physical therapist, and is the creative inspiration — the glue that holds the center (and Steven) all together. She lends her time in running the rest of life while Steven runs the center.

After making it through the first year of running a small business, we sold our house and moved into an apartment on East 11th St, to be closer to the neighborhood. Along the way, we had a lot of help from generous family and friends, who gave their financial support, time and skills. Add that to a bunch of good luck and good vibes in the neighborhood, and ESY is now growing strong!

Read an interview with founder Steven Ross on the four year anniversary of the studio.

We truly strive to serve our community through our actions (karma yoga) in everything that we do. For us, success comes when ESY facilitates better physical health, less stress, more inner peace and a fulfilling yoga practice to each and every student.

None of this would be possible without our awesome yoga teachers, our dedicated front desk volunteers and folks in the neighborhood who support us. Thanks to all of you for believing in us!
